1803B horn plans available?

In conversations in the past I have come across people who actually say they can't hear a difference using alnico magnets!

IMO, based on the success of the Klipsch heritage line, there are, and for a long time have been a LOT of people that just can't hear, period!

There are many other speakers that fit this bill too, i don't mean to pick on Klipsch exclusively. Heck, i even like Cornwalls and properly set-up K-horns from ~500hz down.

1. A message to every one out there about designing horn systems. If the cuttoff is a certain frequency, like say 500hz you can't cross there even with steep slopes. you must cross a little higher. this is what makes the 1803B so attractive even though the size is monstrous, gets more compression driver sound and less top of the range ugliness from the woofer.

2. Making something look similar is one thing but this device is an actually working sound manipulator and the measurements are super critical.

I think the fringes of frequency response must be built in. For example, my 811 horns are rated to 800Hz, yet they're utilized in sytems with 800Hz / 6dB passive crossovers like my Heathkits. There must be a fudge factor there.

FWIW, I have a Behringer 2496 active XO and will eventually be bi-amping my system. I can adjust slopes to 24dB and tune the final XO point anywhere I need it to be.

Yes all horns have a roll off built in at the low end of the range and maybe skilled crossover guys can work with that but in my experience you have to stay away from the cutoff with the crossover point of you are asking for trouble and probably will get a notch in the response.

Also I think the sound of an unloaded driver is probably not so good below the cutoff in addition and may even have some distortion if near driver resonance.

Maybe there are some horn designers out there who could elaborate on the problems of crossing at the cutoff a little better than I can.

Cal, the curve where all the cells meet is very critical,
not sure the best way to measure this but you can't build the
horn without that.

That will be formed automatically when you line up the corners of the horn mouths. You'll note that when you do, the cell mouths will meet top to bottom but not side to side. You'll see as you go along. I'll send you the pics.

Yes those metal Klipsch horns on the heritage speakers might just be the very definition of "pain" and the very reason we are bothering to copy an ancient Altec design.

The Klipsch K55V alnico is one sweet little driver for not much money though, let's not pick on Klipsch on this thread though and post driver discussion on the GPA "Classic" alnico's to tame highs on Synergy horn

Yes, it would make the angle fine if you were using individual metal cells but with wood construction the much less time consuming and better way to make thicker walls is to have to large curved wood plates and add the airplane wing shaped dividers on top of these plates.

Just had a nice long chat with Audiomind. Sounds like the project is a go. Can't wait to see pics of the progress. I'll have to go home now to see if I have some inside callipers to measure the inside of the waveguide.
